BROKEN ARROW, Okla. (KTUL) — The holiday season can be tough for soldiers overseas who can’t be with their families, but Blue Star Mothers and Eagle Ops are making sure our troops have a little piece of home.
“They make us smile, so I’m hoping they make the troops smile,” said Janet Viel, Chapter President for Blue Star Mothers Broken Arrow.
Viel knows what it’s like to have family serve overseas. Her father survived Pearl Harbor and she has two sons in the Air Force, so the military mom knows first hand the importance of reaching out to our troops, especially during the holiday season.
That’s why she and several other volunteers are loading up care packages. The boxes are complete with Christmas stockings, non-perishable food items and sweets.
“It’s just a touch of home, that’s all we want them to have,” said Viel. “We also want them to know they’re not forgotten.”
Since 2004 Blue Star Mothers has sent about 300 packages every holiday season — important numbers for a meaningful project. Eagle Ops also joined the organization, adding even more for those who serve.
“It makes you feel like somebody cares about you back home,” said veteran Jerry Shepherd.
Shepherd received dozens of packages over three deployments. He knows these boxes make a world of difference.
“Sometimes they send you some pretty cool stuff,” said Shepherd. “One time I got a little slingshot monkey and we had so much fun with them.”
No package would be compete without a handwritten letter from home.
“Just saying thank you for all they do for us,” said Viel.
There’s still time to get your packages overseas for your loved ones for Christmas.
If you would like to send one, you can contact Blue Star Mothers at 918-259-9479. Their office is located at 905 South 9th Street, Suite C, in Broken Arrow.
